Disinformation, fake news, and post-truth: a comparative study of general trends, research articles in academic journals on security and newspaper headlines

This research article explores the dynamics and evolution of three highly relevant terms in the contemporary communicative landscape, both in Spanish and in English: "desinformación" ("disinformation"), "noticias falsas" ("fake news") and "posverdad" ("post-truth"). For this purpose, two different analytical approaches are employed. Initially, the Google Trends tool, which reflects the general search trends for each keyword, is combined with a comprehensive analysis of the headlines of two prominent media outlets, nytimes.com and elmundo.es. This reveals how these newspapers have handled and reflected these topics over time. Subsequently, a systematic review of several academic journals on security is carried out. Specifically, by examining the presence of the mentioned terms in the titles, abstracts, or keywords section of the research articles. Furthermore, this study not only provides a detailed understanding of the significance and treatment of these terms, both in academia and journalism, but is also enriched with a wide range of charts and tables that illustrate and complement the analysis, offering a clear visual perspective of the findings.
