Author Guidelines
The Journal of the Spanish Institute for Strategic Studies (IEEE) is a bi-annual electronic publication in Spanish and in English.
It is published in Madrid and it is available in PDF format on the website of the IEEE: https://revista.ieee.es
1. PERIODICITY OF THE JOURNAL:
The two annual issues of the Journal of the Spanish Institute for Strategic Studies will be published in the months of June and December.
2. CONTENTS OF THE JOURNAL:
The Journal includes original and unpublished articles of a scientific nature in the field of research into Defense and Security. It also includes reviews of relevant works. The papers published are subject to a process of double revision, thus guaranteeing anonymity.
Along with the Spanish original, an English-language version of each issue will also be published.
3. PROCESS FOR RECEIPT OF ORIGINALS:
Following notification by the IEEE of acceptance of collaboration, the revision process of the articles will not exceed eight weeks. During this period, the arbiters or referees will inform the Editorial Board regarding their assessment and suggested recommendations.
Also, the Editorial Board will acknowledge receipt of the original documents within a period of seven working days from the day of their receipt, and will notify the authors of the date on which it will send its Editorial Board report.
Once the article has been returned to the author with pertinent editing and suggestions, the author shall have twenty days to send the final version to the Editorial Board.
The approval of the article by the Editorial Board implies that the authors shall limit their revision, before publication, to correcting errors, no modifications to the contents being permitted.
4. CRITERIA FOR SELECTION OF ARCICLES:
From among the articles submitted, those will be selected which comply with the specific Rules for Authors and are outstanding for their originality, importance, scientific interest, and topicality.
This publication is equipped with a plagiarism detection system.
5. EVALUATION SYSTEM:
Articles will be subject to an evaluation by referees who shall determine the originality, the rigor of the research, and the scientific validity of the contents. For its part, the Journal of the IEEE ensures a policy of plagiarism detection by reviewing, previous to sending the article for evaluation, the originality of the manuscripts.
6. INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS:
The articles shall be sent to the e-mail address created for this purpose by the Spanish Institute of Strategic Studies: revistaieee@oc.mde.es
The recommended length for the papers submitted shall be between 6,000 and 12,000 words.
The reviews shall not be over 2,000 words, while the bibliographic notes shall fall within a maximum of 1,000 words.
The original papers shall be written in Spanish or in English.
The text shall include an abstract of the contents of approximately 150 words, and a list of between 5 and 10 key words from the document. Both shall be written in Spanish and in English
The outline of the text shall be as follows:
- Title.
- Name of the author or authors, in Arial font, size 10; institutional and professional affiliation, and the e-mail address, both of these latter indicated at the bottom of the page with an asterisk.
- Main sections: numbered, in boldface capital letters.
- Second level sections: numbered, in lower case italics.
- Third- level Sub-sections: numbered, in lower case.
- The text shall include page numbers in the lower right hand margin.
- A list of the bibliographic material used shall be included, in alphabetical order.
The original papers shall be sent in a single Word file, attaching a PDF document with the curriculum vitae of the authors, along with a summarized curriculum that shall not exceed 150 words.
The body of the message shall include the professional standing of the authors, the institution to which they belong, and personal data: postal address, e-mail address, telephone number and National Identity Card number (DNI).
The body of the message shall also include a brief reference (three or four lines) about the originality and scientific importance of the theses expounded upon in the article.
7. FORMATTING RULES:
The rules regarding format of the Journal of the IEEE comply with the stipulations of the General Sub-directorate of Publications and Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Defense.
The authors shall follow the spelling norms of the Real Academia Española (Royal Academy of the Spanish Language), published in 2010.

The original papers shall be written in Arial font, size 12, with a 1.5 interlinear spacing.
The left and right-hand margins of the text shall be aligned, with a margin of 3 centimeters at the top of the page and on the left-hand side, and 1.5 centimeters at the bottom of the page and on the right-hand side.
The ENTER key shall not be pressed to separate paragraphs, and tabulations shall be avoided.
To highlight a word or sentence, quotation marks or italics shall be used.
No words or sentences shall be underlined, nor in bold print, nor shall text charts be embedded.
Quoted texts longer than four linesshall be set within quotation marks, and separated with a blank line at the beginning and at the end of the quote. The use of double quotation marks is recommended, single quotation marks being reserved for an excerpt within the quotation.
Should there be a mistake in the paragraphs quoted, this shall be indicated by the expression “sic”, in italics and between brackets, i.e., [ ]
Should words or sentences be omitted from the quoted text, this shall be indicated with suspension points (“dot dot dot”), between square brackets […].
Should the author(s) wish to highlight an excerpt within the quoted text, this shall be done in italics, adding a note at the bottom of the page, as follows: (*) Author’s italics
The bibliography and footnotes shall follow Norms UNE 50-104-94 and ISO 690-2.
The footnotes shall be inserted using the corresponding function in Microsoft Word, and they shall be numbered, in Arial font, size 10, single-spaced and with margins aligned.
The bibliography used for each paper shall be included at the end of it following the above-mentioned Norms UNE 50-104-94 and ISO 690-2
Images shall be numbered in Arabic numerals, and tables in Roman numerals.
Graphic material shall be original, property of the author, and with a minimum quality of 1,200 pixels. A brief descriptive caption at the bottom of the tables shall be included.
Along with the Spanish version, a full translation of each issue will be published in English.
8. REPOSITORY AND DATABASE:
The electronic Journal of the Spanish Institute of Strategic Studies is included in the repositories Latindex, Dialnet, MIAR, Redib, Dulcinea
