Contributions of the Semiotics of Culture for an effective diplomacy

Abstract

Following the approaches of the Semiotics of Culture, this article deals with the conflict accentuated between Russia and the West after the invasion of Ukraine. Specifically, three interventions by President Vladimir Putin during the year 2021 are analyzed in order to describe how the universe of meaning in which Russia is intended to be placed in the world and against its adversaries is configured. In this regard, the analysis focuses on the main isotopies of his discourse, on his narrative structure and on enunciative strategies. On this basis, the main oppositions that are established between Russian and Western culture and the reasons that make a friendly and constructive dialogue impossible at the present time are highlighted. It ends by proposing a look towards the future and arguing how a more effective diplomatic relationship between Russia and Europe could be promoted.

  • Asja FIOR, Complutense University of Madrid

She is currently a Researcher in training at the Department of Journalism and Global Communication, where she is doing her doctoral thesis focused on the study of the configuration of public opinion in the digital semiosphere. She has previously been a researcher for the Cabildo de Fuerteventura and honorary collaborator of the Department of Journalism and New Media, where she also obtained the Collaboration Scholarship. She has published scholarly articles at DeSignis and Dykinson. She and she writes the blog “Semiosfera Digital”, in infoLibre.
  • Oleg LUKIN, Complutense University of Madrid

    Graduated in Journalism (UCM) and Master in International Politics (UCM). He currently works at the Spanish embassy in Moscow as an Aecid and Maec scholarship holder for cultural management and scientific diplomacy in the foreign network of diplomatic representations. He is doing his doctorate in the UCM Journalism Program and is a collaborator of El Orden Mundial and the Semiotics of Culture Study Group. His line of research is focused on the post-Soviet space from the perspective of the Semiotics of Culture.

  • Miguel Ángel MARTÍN BLANCO, Miembro del Grupo de Estudios de Semiótica de la Cultura (GESC). Licenciado en Filosofía por la Universidad de Valladolid (UVa) y Doctor en Periodismo por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM)

    Member of the Semiotics of Culture Study Group (GESC). Graduated in Philosophy from the University of Valladolid (UVa) and Doctor in Journalism from the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) with a thesis on the propaganda of the Islamic State. He has also been a member of the R&D Project 'Recipient figures in contemporary non-fiction texts: reader, observer, viewer' (Ref.: PGC2018-098984-B-I00), and together with Jorge Lozano he has coordinated the volume Documentos del presente. Una mirada semiótica and has been an honorary collaborator of the Department of Journalism and New Media of the UCM. He currently works as an Education for Development Technician for the FABRE Foundation
