CONVENTIONAL DETERRENCE
Abstract
Th e term deterrence is often used in offi cial documents related to security
policy. however, these documents rarely provide a detailed insight
into the deterrence model intended to be implemented or, consequently,
provide guidelines that would enable the organisation of the
military resources needed to implement it.
Th is paper aims to provide a precise defi nition of the concept of deterrence,
explain the models that currently exist in classical deterrence
theory, their strengths and weaknesses, and describe the main military
and political implications of adopting one or other of these models.
despite the fact that the vast majority of studies on deterrence focus on
nuclear deterrence, this paper concentrates on conventional deterrence
because it is the type of deterrence that applies to spain.
